Hospice Information Set Training by CMS

Hello, Hospice Friends!

Well, we all knew this was coming... and now, it is becoming reality-- Hospice is going to have its own data set, much like the OASIS or MDS, called the HIS (Hospice Information Set). Initially, just outcomes will be driven by this data, but, as we all know from experience in the other areas of healthcare, this one day may affect our payment. I have attached the CMS HIS "Fact Sheet" for your reference on the NQF measures being included in the data set.

So, with all of that riding on this new data set- the key will be validity and consistency by all hospices across the nation. This is the only way for outcomes and payments to be accurately driven by this data, by which we will be judged. CMS has set up "in person" trainings in Baltimore, that will be live streamed on February 4-5th. If you are able to attend, or at least make note and watch the recorded version (which has been promised), I highly recommend it! This training is free- and from CMS, who is in charge of these "rules"! CMS has also promised a manual, which will outline the "response specific instructions" for each item in the data set, that is due out later this month.

Here is the website/excerpt regarding these opportunities for training:

Registration for on-site attendance at the Hospice Item Set (HIS) Data Collection Training is now available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hospice-item-set-his-data-collection-training-registration-10002003261.

Registration will be open until 11:59 PM ET on Monday, January 27th. The training will be held at the CMS Central Office in Baltimore, MD, on February 4th and 5th from 12:30-4:30 pm each day. Participants will need to attend both afternoons; the 2/5 session is not a repeat of 2/4, but includes unique material. The number of participants on-site will be limited and the number of in-person participants per hospice will be limited to one. Early registration is recommended.

To ensure access to the training for ALL hospices, the training will be live-streamed, and will also be recorded and posted on the CMS website for on-demand viewing. Instructions for live video-streaming access will be provided at http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Quality-Initiatives-Patient-Assessment-Instruments/Hospice-Quality-Reporting/Hospice-Item-Set-HIS.html. No registration is required for video-streaming. If you are unable to live-stream the HIS Data Collection Training, videos of the trainings will be posted on the same cms.gov site shortly after the training is complete.

I will keep you updated on anything that I see- and plan to do trainings myself- in person and by webinars, as more information becomes available.

Take care all,
